What is a Prerequisite?
A prerequisite is a course or skill you must complete before enrolling in another
course. For example, you need to pass ENG 001A with a grade of "C" or better (or "P"
for pass/no pass) before taking ENG 001B.
Prerequisite Clearance Form
You can find prerequisite details in the Mission College Catalog or by selecting "View Catalog Entry" when searching for a course.
Before Submitting a Prerequisite Clearance Form
Submit documentation such as unofficial transcripts showing you’ve completed the required course or have equivalent skills.
Most prerequisites require a minimum grade of "C" or better.
Unofficial documents are not stored after submission.
Transcripts must clearly show your name and the institution’s name to avoid delays.
Processing takes 48–72 business hours.
In-progress coursework is only accepted for fall and spring registration (not for winter or summer).
Once your course is complete, email an updated transcript with the final grade to the Assessment Office at least two weeks before the semester begins.
This form is only for Mission College courses. Contact West Valley College directly for their process.
Clearance results will be sent to your mywvm.wvm.edu email or the personal email you provide.
For transfer credit, submit official transcripts or test scores to the Admissions and Records Office. Visit the External Credit page for more info.
Ways to Clear a Prerequisite
High School Coursework
Some high school classes may meet prerequisite requirements. Check which courses are
eligible.
College Coursework from Other Institutions
Courses from other colleges may be accepted if equivalent. Upload your unofficial
transcript when submitting the form.
If your course isn’t on the pre-approved equivalency list, it will be reviewed by
the academic department.
In-progress coursework from other institutions is not accepted.
AP/CLEP Exam Credit
If you've passed AP or CLEP exams that meet prerequisite standards, upload your score
report. View accepted scores and courses.
Alternate Knowledge or Skills
If you have equivalent skills through work, training, or other experience, submit
a written explanation and supporting documents for a prerequisite waiver. The academic
department will review it.
Challenge a Prerequisite
You may challenge a prerequisite based on criteria established by WVMCCD Board Policy
and California regulations. Learn about the challenge process.
You can withdraw from classes via the Mission College Portal. Be sure to check the Academic Calendar for important withdrawal deadlines.
Full-semester courses: You may withdraw during the first 2 weeks of instruction without any notation on your academic record.
Short-term courses: You may withdraw before 10% of the course duration has passed with no notation.
Full-semester courses: You may withdraw up to the end of the 12th week, and a “W” will appear on your transcript.
Short-term courses: You may withdraw before 75% of the course duration, and a “W” will be issued.
Withdrawals after the deadline require a petition and must be due to extenuating circumstances beyond your control.
Approved late withdrawals will still be recorded as a “W.”
Students are limited to three attempts per course (with grades of W, NP, D, or F). A Student Petition is required for a fourth and final attempt.
If you do not officially withdraw, the instructor may assign a letter grade.
Grade changes may be requested up to two years after the grade was posted (per WVM Board Policy AP 4230).
Faculty signatures are NOT required for withdrawals submitted by published deadlines.
It is the student’s responsibility to withdraw on time.
Per Title 5, Section 55024, an Excused Withdrawal (EW) may be granted when circumstances beyond your control prevent you from completing a course. Examples include:
Job transfer outside the region
Family illness where you are the primary caregiver
Incarceration release or involuntary transfer before term end
Immigration actions
Other severe extenuating circumstances
Key Notes on EW:
Requires documentation and approval.
May be granted any time after the no-notation withdrawal period.
Does not count toward:
Progress probation or dismissal
The three-attempt limit
Enrollment attempts
Does not permit a refund of enrollment fees.
Cannot be used if the student was removed due to misconduct or requested a mid-term transfer while incarcerated.
If you are having trouble paying for your classes, talk to us. Stop by Financial Aid in SEC-118. We are available via chat as well.
Mission College will not allow a student to re-register in the college nor will the college forward any other records to other institutions when students have holds on their records.
Degrees and certificates will also be held until all outstanding fees have been paid or cleared.
Holds can also be forwarded to a collection agency if fees remain unpaid.
