You can withdraw from classes via the Mission College Portal. Be sure to check the Academic Calendar for important withdrawal deadlines.
Withdrawal Policy
No-Notation Withdrawal
Full-semester courses: You may withdraw within the first two weeks of instruction
with no notation on your academic record.
Short-term courses: You may withdraw before 10% of the course duration has passed
with no notation.
“W” Grade Withdrawal
Full-semester courses: You may withdraw through the end of the 12th week of instruction.
A “W” will appear on your transcript.
Short-term courses: You may withdraw before 75% of the course duration, and a “W”
will be issued.
Withdrawals After the Deadline
Withdrawals after published deadlines require a Student Petition and must be based
on extenuating circumstances beyond your control. Approved late withdrawals are still
recorded as a “W.”
Important Notes
- Students are limited to three attempts per course. Grades of W, NP, D, or F count
as attempts. A Student Petition is required for a fourth and final attempt.
- If you do not officially withdraw, the instructor may assign a letter grade.
- Grade changes may be requested up to two years after the grade was posted, per WVM
Board Policy AP 4230.
- Faculty signatures are not required for withdrawals submitted by published deadlines.
- It is the student’s responsibility to withdraw by the appropriate deadline.
Excused Withdrawal (EW)
Under Title 5, Section 55024, an Excused Withdrawal (EW) may be granted when circumstances
beyond your control prevent you from completing a course. Examples include:
- Job transfer outside the region
- Family illness where you are the primary caregiver
- Incarceration release or involuntary transfer before the end of the term
- Immigration actions
- Other severe extenuating circumstances
Key EW Information
- Documentation and approval are required.
- An EW may be granted any time after the no-notation withdrawal period.
- An EW does not count toward progress probation or dismissal, the three-attempt course
limit, or enrollment attempt limits.
- An EW does not permit a refund of enrollment fees.
- An EW cannot be granted if the student was removed due to misconduct or requested
a mid-term transfer while incarcerated.
