NCE 10- English for Citizenship
0 units. In this course students learn English skills needed to pass an oral and written citizenship exam. Students practice English skills related to U.S. history, government, and civics.


Noncredit Certificate in Low-Beginning ESL
Students who complete NCE 910A and 910B  are eligible to apply for this certificate.

Courses in the Certificate

  • NCE 910A- Foundations in ESL I(Low-Beginning)
    0 units. This noncredit course is for English learners at the level of beginning, pre-academic ESL Level 0. This course provides basic functional practice in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar.

  • NCE 910B - Foundations in ESL II  (Low-Beginning)
    0 units. This course is a continuation of NCESL 910A. This course continues to develop very low beginning students' skills in basic reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar.

Noncredit Certificate in Beginning ESL
Students who complete the following courses are eligible to apply for this certificate: NCE 920A, 920B, 924, and either 920GW or 920PL.

Courses in the Certificate: 

  • NCE 920A - Beginning ESL I  
    0 units.This noncredit course provides basic functional practice in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar for beginning ESL students.

  • NCE 920B - Beginning ESL II  
    0 units. This course is a continuation of NCESL 920A. It builds on the topics learned in 920A, but also introduces more complex structures and provides more practice in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar for beginning ESL students.

  •  NCE 924- Beginning ESL College Skills
    0 units. Students learn to improve their computer skills and study skills such as reading, vocabulary, listening and speaking for greater success in ESL courses.

  •  NCE 920 GW - Beginning Grammar and Writing 
    0 units. The course provides an introduction to English grammar and opportunities to practice basic sentence-level writing skills.

  • NCE 920 PL- Beginning Pronunciation and Listening
    0 units. Students develop and practice basic aspects of American English pronunciation in order to speak more clearly, confidently, and accurately.

Noncredit Certificate in High-Beginning ESL
Students who complete the following courses are eligible to apply for this certificate: NCE 931, 932, 933, and 934

Courses in the Certificate: 

  • NCE 931 - High-Beginning Listening and Speaking
    0 units. Students develop listening skills necessary for comprehension of vocabulary, sentences, and short lectures on academic and day-to-day topics. Students also develop pronunciation and speaking skills necessary for clearly expressing themselves.

  • NCE 932- High-Beginning Grammar and Writing
    0 units. Students develop basic writing and grammar skills of standard written English. Students also practice and write simple and compound sentences using correct word forms, word order, articles, prepositions, spelling, and punctuation within their written compositions.

  •  NCE 933- High-Beginning Reading and Vocabulary
    0 units.  In this course, students develop reading and vocabulary skills necessary for comprehension of simplified articles and stories in English.

  • NCE 934- Bridge to ESL College Success 
    0 units. Students develop their English language skills as they acquire successful strategies for the credit-level ESL program and other academic college classes.

 

Noncredit Certificate in ESL for Child Care
Students who complete the following courses are eligible to apply for this certificate: NCE 920EC, 930EC, and 940EC.

  • NCE 920EC- ESL for Child Care: Intro
    0 units. This beginning level course develops oral and written communication skills in English within the context of child care and parenting. Students develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills for communicating about a child’s day-to-day care, needs, and interests.

  •  NCE 930EC - ESL for Child Care: Health and Safety
    0 units. This high-beginning level course develops oral and written communication skills in English within the context of child care and parenting. Students develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills for communicating about a child’s health and safety.

  •  NCE 940EC- ESL for Child Care: Ages and Stages
    0 units. This low-intermediate level course develops oral and written communication skills in English within the context of child care and parenting. Students develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills for communicating with and about infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age children.
