FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Santa Clara, CA – Mission College is thrilled to announce the grand opening of Mission Market, an innovative initiative designed to support students by providing access to fresh, nutritious food every week. This event will take place on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at 4:30 p.m.

In collaboration with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Silicon Valley and the Bill Wilson Center, Mission Market aims to be a cornerstone of student support, recognizing that access to healthy meals is vital for academic success.

With this program, students can fill their bags each week with an array of seasonal fruits, vegetables, and essential kitchen staples like rice, pasta, and canned goods, allowing them to prepare wholesome meals at home.

The welcoming atmosphere of Mission Market goes beyond just providing food; it fosters a sense of community where students can connect, share recipes, and discover additional resources.

“Mission Market is not only about meeting immediate nutritional needs; it’s about building relationships and a supportive environment,” said Seher Awan, Ed.D., President of Mission College. “We believe that every student deserves access to healthy food, and this initiative reflects our commitment to their overall well-being.”

This initiative reflects the college's broader mission to support the holistic development of its students, ensuring they have the tools they need to succeed both academically and personally.

“This market is a game-changer for our students,” said Priscila Moreira, President of the Associated Student Government. “Having access to healthy food allows us to focus on our studies and succeed in our academic goals.”

Mental health is also a priority at Mission College, which provides eight complimentary counseling sessions per semester to support student well-being. Facilities are available for students facing housing instability, allowing them to access showers at the Athletics Department near the gym. Additionally, a laptop loan and WiFi hotspot program ensures that students without personal technology or reliable internet can fully engage in their coursework.

With a focus on community engagement and education, Mission Market empowers students to make informed choices about their health and well-being, contributing to a more supportive and thriving campus environment. The market empowers students with the knowledge and skills to make healthier choices.

With guidance on meal planning, food preparation, and budget-friendly cooking tips, the market helps students navigate their nutritional needs effectively.

“Our goal is to alleviate hunger on campus and enhance student wellness, contributing to a more equitable educational environment where every student can thrive,” said Connor Keese, Director of Recruitment and Student Life.

The grand opening event will feature a warm welcome from various leaders, including Mayor Lisa Gillmor of Santa Clara, Chancellor Bradley J. Davis of the West Valley-Mission Community College District, and Anne Kepner, President of the Board of Trustees. Attendees can also hear remarks from key partners from Second Harvest Food Bank of Silicon Valley and the Bill Wilson Center, who will share insights about the impact of this initiative.

“By ensuring every student has access to nutritious meals, we are not just filling stomachs but fueling futures. Mission Market is a bold step toward breaking down barriers to student success, and it reflects our district's unwavering commitment to equity, wellness, and academic achievement," Chancellor Davis said.
