NorCal Women in the Fire Service and Mission College proudly present the inaugural First Alarm Girls Fire Camp for high school students.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SANTA CLARA, CA -- NorCal Women in the Fire Service and Mission College are excited to announce the First Alarm Girls Fire Camp, a groundbreaking event designed for high school students interested in exploring careers in public safety. This free two-day camp will take place on September 28-29, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at Mission College, 3000 Mission College Blvd, Santa Clara, CA.

The First Alarm Girls Fire Camp offers a unique opportunity for students to get hands-on experience with the tools and skills used by professional firefighters. Taught by female and non-binary professional firefighters from the Bay Area and beyond, the camp aims to challenge participants and broaden their understanding of what a career in the fire service can entail.

"We are thrilled to host this event and provide young individuals with the chance to explore a career in fire service," said Roy Vasquez, Dean of Public Safety, Health & Wellness Mission at College. "This camp not only educates but also empowers participants to pursue their passions in public safety."

Participants will engage in various activities that simulate real-life firefighting scenarios, providing them with a comprehensive view of the fire service. The camp also includes lunch, snacks, a swag bag, and a t-shirt for all attendees. Registration opens on August 19, 2024, and spots are limited. Santa Clara residents will have early bird registration starting August 17.

"The First Alarm Girls Fire Camp is an incredible opportunity for young individuals to see firsthand what it's like to be a firefighter," said Guy Hall, Chair of the Fire Protection Technology & EMT Program at Mission College. "We hope this experience will inspire the next generation of firefighters and public safety professionals."
The importance of female firefighters in today's industry cannot be overstated. As communities become more diverse, the fire service must reflect that diversity to effectively serve and protect. Female firefighters bring unique perspectives and strengths that enhance team dynamics and problem-solving capabilities. Additionally, they serve as role models, breaking down gender barriers and encouraging more women to enter the field.

"Incorporating more women into the fire service is essential for creating a workforce that truly represents the community it serves," Vasquez said. "Their contributions are invaluable, and camps like this one are crucial in fostering an inclusive and diverse future for the fire service."
