Theresa Tran – Counselor
I was also a first generation college student; I was raised for a time by a single parent in a low-income household, and English was my second language when I came to the U.S. as a refugee from Viet Nam. I now hold both bachelor’s (UC Santa Cruz) and master’s degrees (Sofia University), but it took a lot of hard work and dedication. I’m here to support and guide you as you work toward your objectives, and know that with perseverance and the support of caring programs like EOPS, you too can achieve your educational goal!
Alejandro Zavala – Counselor
As a first-generation college student, I am familiar with the journey many of you are traveling. I began my college career at a California Community College, Hartnell College, and English is my second language. Through support, determination, and commitment, I was able to earn my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from CSUMB & SJSU. I’m here to support and guide you as you work toward your educational aspirations. Know that the journey may get challenging at times, but with perseverance, you too can achieve your educational goals!
Dr. Ajani Byrd – EOPS Director
School has always been a challenge for me. I rarely grasped new concepts quickly. However, I knew I was capable of excelling in the classroom; I just needed to dedicate myself to the struggle and push myself when times became difficult. Embodying the meaning of my name (“he who wins the struggle”), I have continued to commit myself to achieving my educational goals. I am proud to say that support networks helped me to successfully navigate my undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral studies and become the first in my family to earn a Ph.D. I strongly believe everyone is capable of attaining great academic heights; it’s just about finding the right “roadmap” to get you there. I am proud and humbled to serve as your EOPS Director, because I get to lead a team that is devoted to helping you create your own roadmap.
Jennifer Keh – EOPS/CARE Program Specialist
I am extremely passionate about helping students to reach their educational goal. I dropped out of college when I found out I was pregnant, because I was unaware of the resources available to student parents. After my divorce, I had the courage to go back to college as a single mom of two and I am a proud 2014 graduate of West Valley and Mission College with an AA in Sociology. I then continued my education at San Jose State University as an EOP student and graduated in 2016 Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s in Sociology. I just completed my Masters Degree in Counselor Education and I am excited to start utilizing my education. My advice to students is to take it one day at a time. If you're a parent, learn to see your education as an investment. School can pull you away from family time, but it doesn't make you inadequate in any way. Be proud of your efforts and achievements! "Live your Legacy!"
Amanda Marshall – Program Assistant
Education is my passion! I am so happy to be here as part of a team that gives you tools and support to help you achieve your goals. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from San Jose State University. I am currently looking into programs to pursue a Master’s degree in Psychology, with the ultimate goal of becoming a therapist. I am here to help, so please reach out whenever you need assistance with EOPS or beyond! Taking advantage of the resources available to you is the best way to reach success. When you face an obstacle in your path, find a way over or around, but never give up on your dreams!
