LAEP Employer Guide

Thank you for your interest in Mission College LAEP! We are exctied to welcome new mentors for our student researchers. To learn more about becoming a qualified LAEP employer, please review the information below.


Employer Eligibility

Review the below eligibility requirements to see if you qualify as a LAEP employer. Only these specified entities can participate in our program. If you have any eligility questions, contact us. 

  • Research Centers and Institutions
    • Research centers and institutions operated by public postsecondary educational institutions, if their learning-aligned employment opportunities provide participating students with direct opportunities to participate in the research that is undertaken by the respective research centers and institutions.
    • Research is not limited to scientific research and can take place outside of an academic discipline. The research should be directed and supervised by faculty, staff or another mentor who will determine the research requirements.
  • Public
    • Public schools operated by school districts, county superintendents of schools, the Department of the Youth Authority, or the Department of Education.
  • Nonprofit and For-profit Employers
    • Nonsectarian, nonpolitical organizations capable of providing full-time employment after graduation or connection to another employer able to provide full-time employment after graduation.

STEP 1: Complete an Employer Interest Form

Once you've reviewed the employer eligibility and determine you meet the outlined requirements, please fill out a LAEP Employer Interest Form so our team can get in contact! We are only accepting employers whose job positions allow students to conduct resreach in an area that is educationally beneficial to the student's chosen area of study, career objective, or exploration of career objectives.

STEP 2: Submit and Sign Agreement Forms
  • Once we have received your interest form, a LAEP Liaison will be in touch to review your application and next steps. You can expect to be asked for the following items:
    • Proposed Job Descriptions for each LAEP position
    • Current W9 Copy (Required)
    • Certificate of Insurance (if applicable)
  • After, you will receive a notification from DocuSign requesting your signature for the Employer Agreement, and a separate notification for the Addendum. Please review this document carefully.
  • Prior to hiring or interviewing any student, employers must complete the Employer Agreement and submit requested documents. Once finalized, your contract is active for one full year on the signing date. 
STEP 3: Send Your Job Descriptions
  1. Once your Employer Agreement is completed, you can advertise your job positions at Mission College through the LAEP Coordinators or on Mission College's Handshake.
  2. If you choose to post your positions on Handshake, please make sure to follow the below guidelines to the best of your ability. 
  3. Your LAEP job description should include, but is not limited to, the following:
    1. Name/classification of position.
    2. Name and address of employer.
    3. Department or office where the eligible student will be employed.
    4. Location where the eligible student will perform his or her duties
    5. Name of the eligible student's supervisor
    6. The term of the eligible student's anticipated employment, including beginning and ending dates (if applicable)
    7. Purpose or role of the position within the organization
    8. Duties and responsibilities associated with the position
    9. Rates of pay for the position
    10. General qualifications for the position and for various levels and rates of pay associated with the position
    11. Evaluation procedures and schedules (if applicable)
STEP 4: Recruit and Hire Students

Students must be approved for LAEP based on their individual needs. If you are student interested in seeing if you qualify, please visit our LAEP FAQ section.

For employers, once you identify the final candidate(s), please reach out to either [email protected] or [email protected] so we can double check eligibility and begin preparing a Student Hiring Form. 

STEP 5: Submit a Student Participation Form

Once hired, a final Student Participation Form will be generated through DocuSign for review and approval. Each student hired will received a Student Participation Form and it outlnes the final terms of employment and LAEP funding. Please have reviewed and signed the Student Participation Form prior to the student(s) start date. 

After completing this process, your LAEP contract will be active for one full year and is renewable annually. Employers do not need to go through the above process again to be renewed. Your LAEP Liaisons will be in contact with a renewal contract nearing your company's current expiration date. 
Employer FAQs
How are LAEP positions funded for a UC, CSU, or CCC?

If the direct employer is UC, CSU, CCC, or one of its respective campuses, the program may provide 100 percent of the student’s compensation.

How are LAEP positions funded for a public institution or a non-profit corporation?

If the direct employer is a public educational institution or a nonprofit corporation, the program may provide no more than 90 percent of the student’s compensation.

How are LAEP positions funded for a for-profit employer?
If the direct employer is a for-profit employer, the program may provide no more than 50 percent of the student’s compensation.
How do I renew my Employer Agreement? 

Employer Agreements are valid for one year after the signing date. Once approved, employers only need to renew their Employer Agreement once per year and do not need to reapply.

Once a contract gets close to expiration, a LAEP Liaison will reach out to renew or terminate your contract.
