Help Students Succeed as an ASC Peer Tutor
Are you passionate about helping others succeed academically? The Academic Support
Center (ASC) at Mission College is looking for dedicated and motivated students to
join our team of peer tutors. As a tutor, you'll have the opportunity to assist fellow
students, enhance your own skills, and gain valuable experience that can be used on

To start the Tutor Application, click on the button below and ensure that you have
Faculty complete the Recommendation Form. The instructor recommendation form must
be signed by the appropriate course instructors from the subject areas you wish to
tutor.
Peer tutors provide one-on-one and small group tutoring to students in the Academic
Support Center (ASC) located in the Student Engagement Center, Room SEC-154. They
support students’ learning by reviewing class material, identifying learning difficulties,
formulating ideas for papers, working on solutions to problems, and providing useful
study skills to students who need supplemental help.
Recruitment Timeframe
The Tutoring Center has two recruitment periods every year:
November through December for the following Spring term
April through July for the following Fall term
Tutors are selected through a process based on qualifications, recommendations, and
an interview with the ASC Faculty. Selected tutors will be expected to register for
an online training course, INS 10/810 Peer Tutor and Mentor Training, which is a 12-week
class offered in the spring and fall semesters.
Tutors are expected to act as role models for students by regularly attending their
own classes, practicing successful study habits, and maintaining a positive learning
attitude.

Provide academic support during assigned hours.
Be punctual, use time effectively for academic tasks, and focus on students' needs.
Prepare for tutoring sessions by reviewing any lecture notes, handouts, and/or textbooks.
Exercise professional discretion at all times. Conversations with other staff should
enhance tutoring skills and be conducted tactfully. Information about students should
remain confidential within the Tutoring Center.
Maintain accurate and complete records of all tutoring sessions.
Participate in outreach activities, such as presenting information regarding academic
support programs.
Attend ASC staff meetings and training workshops.
A strong understanding of the subject/course you wish to tutor.
Earned grade of a B or better in the class you will be tutoring, with an overall GPA
of 3.0 or higher.
Strong organizational, interpersonal communication, and time management skills.
Ability to serve as a role model for students seeking assistance.
Obtain recommendations from at least two Mission College faculty in the subject area
of interest.
Commitment to working at least 8 hours per week.
Peer tutors are compensated according to the Student Worker Salary Schedule issued
by the district Human Resources Office. Job assignments may include tutoring in the
Academic Support Center and/or embedded tutoring in a classroom setting.
Employment as a tutor does not guarantee a minimum number of work hours or continued
employment.

Peer Tutor and Mentor Training (INS 010) 1.5 UNITS; Online Asynchronous Total Lecture: 27 hours Acceptable for Credit: California State University Pass/No Pass Option
This is a 1.5-unit online course for students who want to learn about peer assistance
techniques and become effective peer educators. Students will learn to establish goals
and objectives, implement an assistance session plan, apply effective learning skills,
develop communication and listening skills, and foster critical thinking.
This course focuses on principles to effectively offer tutoring/mentoring across different
disciplines and settings. These principles are flexible, and each tutor/mentor will
apply them to their discipline, adapting strategies as necessary.
CRLA Level I Tutor Certification Option Students can earn a CRLA Level I Tutor Certification by completing the course and
meeting additional requirements.
Peer Tutor and Mentor Training (INS 810, Non-credit Course) 0 UNITS; Online Asynchronous
Total Lecture: 27 hours Pass/No Pass Only. Non-degree applicable course.
This course provides students with effective learning strategies for peer tutoring
and mentoring. It emphasizes communication, problem solving, critical thinking, structuring
learning experiences, and handling challenges, including online tutoring. This course
is cross-listed with INS 010.
Advanced Training for Peer Tutors and Mentors (INS 015) 1.5 UNITS; Online Asynchronous Total Lecture: 27 hours Advisory: INS 010/810 Acceptable for Credit: California State University Pass/No Pass Option
This advanced course covers the roles and responsibilities of tutors and mentors,
strategies for working with adult learners, communication strategies, and assisting
students with disabilities. It may be offered via hybrid or distance learning.
CRLA Level II Advanced Tutor Certification Option Students can earn a CRLA Level II Advanced Tutor Certification by completing the course
and meeting additional requirements.
Advanced Training for Peer Tutors and Mentors (INS 815, Non-Credit Course) 0 UNITS; Online Asynchronous
Total Lecture: 27 hours Prerequisite: INS 810 Pass/No Pass Only. Non-degree applicable course. This second-level course emphasizes probing questions, intercultural communication,
strategies for adult learners, and group facilitation strategies. It also focuses
on tutoring specific skills or subjects. This course is cross-listed with INS 015.
