FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SANTA CLARA, CA -- The TRIO and EOPS Programs at Mission College marked a resounding success in their inaugural First-Generation Celebration and Silent Auction, exceeding their fundraising target by collecting over $19,000 to support scholarships for first-generation college students.

"At Mission College, our commitment to providing equal opportunities for all students is exemplified through programs like TRIO and EOPS. These programs serve as a vital support network, empowering first-generation college students to overcome challenges and reach their academic and personal aspirations," said Diego Espinoza, EOPS Director at Mission.

With an initial goal of $8,000, TRIO and EOPS rallied the community to contribute to the cause at the event held on Wednesday, November 8, in the Freeberg Hospitality Management Building. Sponsors, including Meriwest Credit Union, Graphic Affect, Latino Education Advancement Foundation, Discover Santa Clara, Mayan Kitchen, and Catering for All Occasions, played a pivotal role in the event's success.

The funds raised, totaling over $19,000, will significantly impact the lives of these individuals, providing essential support for necessities such as food, textbooks, tutoring, and mentorship. This financial assistance not only alleviates the immediate challenges faced by first-generation students but also serves as a stepping stone towards achieving their academic and personal goals.

"We are thrilled to announce that we exceeded our fundraising goal, thanks to the overwhelming support of our sponsors and community. This achievement reflects the collective dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of first-generation college students," said Manuel Salazar, TRIO Program Director.

TRIO is dedicated to increasing retention, graduation, and transfer rates for first-generation college students, low-income individuals, and students with disabilities at Mission College. Comprising two projects, TRIO Classic and TRIO STEM, these programs are tailored to meet the specific needs of students across all majors and those pursuing STEM fields, respectively.

Extended Opportunity Program & Services (EOPS) is designed to help underserved, at-promise students achieve their academic and personal goals. Providing eligible students with personal and academic counseling, as well as additional resources, EOPS ensures their success.

TRIO and EOPS extend their gratitude to the community for joining them in their mission to empower first-generation college students at Mission College.
