“I chose Mission College because of the excellent reputation for its intensive English program and STEM courses. Mission prepared me for the rigorous academic work at UC Berkeley. I know that I made the right decision by choosing Mission.”

Hao Pham came to Mission College in the summer of 2011 to pursue his dream of getting a college degree in the United States. A son of a physics high school teacher in Vietnam, he has always wanted to be a physicist.

At Mission College, he started at the Institute for International Studies (IIS) where he improved his English skills and moved quickly to the degree program. Hao’s classmates and teachers describe him as being humble, focused, studious, and driven. His determination in overcoming challenges and exemplary work ethic landed him on the Dean’s list while his positive “can do” attitude was infectious and inspired everyone around him.

In the spring of 2015, he graduated from UC Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science in Physics. Hao attributed his success to the tireless support of his mother and father. Hao’s proud father traveled from Vietnam to attend the graduation and to celebrate his son’s achievement.

Hao is finishing up his internship at Physics Materials Lab at UC Berkeley and preparing to go to a graduate school to earn a master’s degree. He says, “When things get tough, I visit my friends and teachers Mission College to get reenergized.” Hao considers Mission College to be his home away from home.
