Puente is an award-winning program that has helped thousands of community college students transfer to four-year colleges and reach their dreams. The program combines writing instruction, academic counseling and mentoring to help students build skills for academic and career success. Puente students take two consecutive writing classes, English 908 and English 1A. These classes provide a supportive and stimulating environment as students develop their writing skills through an exploration of the Latin@ experience. At the same time, Puente students work closely with the Puente counselor to explore career options, develop an academic educational plan, and identify lifetime goals in Counseling 5 and Counseling 7. In addition, Puente students visit University of California and California State University campuses, attend an annual Puente motivational conference, and participate in a variety of other activities. Puente is open on a first-come-first-served basis to all students who meet the eligibility requirements, which include being eligible for English 908 in the Fall and wanting to transfer to a four-year college or university.
