We are delighted that you have chosen to participate in our program. Remember, the EOPS staff is here to help you make college a successful experience!

EOPS is a state-funded program which offers educational support services and grants to students who have historically experienced economic, social, or language disadvantages and who are often within the first generation in their families to attend college. The intent, purpose and resources of EOPS are directed at assisting EOPS students to achieve their academic and career goals.

What is EOPS?

The Nickel and the Nail

The symbol for EOPS throughout the state is the Indian-head nickel and the twisted nails. Have you ever wondered about the significance of this symbol?

The story goes something like this: A young man was walking along the street with only a nickel in his pocket, feeling very poor indeed. He was quite depressed about his situation. He picked up a couple of nails which he found on the ground, twisted them together, and put them in his pocket. The nails and the nickel jangled together, making a pleasant noise as the young man continued on his way. It was almost as if he had more money than before. He began to feel more hopeful about his situation and his attitude changed enough for him to begin trying to improve his position in life.

This little tale illustrates what EOPS can do for you. The EOPS staff hopes to provide you with the little extras for you to place in your pocket—extra things that can make you feel much richer as you embark on your educational experience.
