Professional and Academic Background
Certified Public Accountant - 1996
Jose received his CPA in 1996 while working for the CPA firm of Deloitte & Touche, LLP as a Senior Tax Consultant in Los Angeles. Later, Jose was a Senior Financial Analyst with Hewlett-Packard's Microwave and Finance/Remarketing Divisions. For over a decade, Jose maintained a minor, but very active role in the area of tax preparation and compliance to keep his skills up to date. Jose has also contributed to several projects with local small and large businesses.
Jose's academic path includes Mount San Antonio Community College, Santa Monica City College, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Los Angeles, UCLA (BA Economics - '92), and UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business (Masters in Bus Admin - '97). Jose has also completed several formal certificates and courses in masters (SFSU, CSUEB) and doctoral (USF) level programs related to online learning and cognitive psychology. Additionally, Jose continually updates his accounting and business expertise via seminars and workshops each year, including over 100 hours of continuing education with the Cal CPA, Big-4, and conferences.
The 2014-2015 academic year is Jose's 17th year teaching; Jose is also a full-time instructor at Foothill College. He loves the "art and science" of teaching, so Jose constantly introduces new ways of teaching his classes. Jose tries to make the learning experience one that reflects his assumption that students are taking his class to LEARN accounting to either use immediately at work or to transfer to a 4-year program. As such, Jose keeps the level and scope of his courses in line with the demands of the accounting industry and surrounding 4-year institutions.
Jose's classes are fast-paced and challenging. Beyond the grade, the rewards of successfully
completing his classes are students can immediately feel confident that they know
how to perform the duties of an accountant at the technical level and are also ready
to succeed in upper division coursework at other academic institutions.
Above all, Jose is very approachable and friendly. He has an open-door policy, so
students are always welcome to contact him or visit whenever he in his office. Have
fun with accounting!
