From the Fields to Apple

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—Mission College in Santa Clara will welcome on Monday Apple engineer Enrique Diaz for a talk on campus about how he went from working in the fields of the Central Valley to being an engineer at one of the technological giants in Silicon Valley.

Diaz’ parents immigrated illegally in 1972 with Enrique and settled in a tiny community near Fresno. Both parents only had an elementary school education. Enrique began working in the fields at the age of 7 and continued until high school, but eventually enrolled at Cal Poly. All three eventually became U.S. Citizens as did Enrique’s three younger siblings

Enrique’s son, Alejandro, is now a student at MIT

Diaz will speak from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Gillmor Center Room 107 to kick off STEM Week.

STEM Week will also include a virtual reality experience (Thursday), Noche de Ciencias/Science Night with the community (Thursday night) and a high school STEM outreach day (Friday)
