SANTA CLARA, Calif.-- Dr. Omar Murillo, Director of the AANAPISI program at Mission College in Santa Clara, was named one of 22 fellows for the National Community College Hispanic Council.
The program is hosted by the University of San Diego School of Leadership and Education Sciences and is designed to develop a pool of highly qualified Latino/as whose career focus is to one day become a community college president.
Murillo has been the director of the AANAPISI program since September 2016, which
focuses on increasing the graduation and transfer rates of Asian-American and Pacific
Islander students. Murillo previously worked with the national TRIO program at Cal
State Monterey Bay, increasing responsibility from his start in June 2009.
Murillo received his Bachelor's from CSUMB, his Master's in Education from San Jose
State and Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from San Francisco State.
Components of the Leadership Fellows Program include two residential training seminars. The first was in June. Each Fellow prepares an individualized professional development plan and engages in a mentoring relationship with a Hispanic community college leader, as well as attending the NCCHC Leadership Symposium in the fall, and carrying out online activities in between sessions.
The Council was established 30 years ago and more than 250 community college administrators have participated as Leadership Fellows. Of the original 72 fellows, more than 15 are now community college presidents and many others have moved onto executive leadership positions.
