STEM Week Kicks Off with Facebook Latino/a Panel

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—Mission College in Santa Clara will kick off STEM Week with a Facebook Panel of experts on Monday, April 16, specifically those of Latino/a decent who are working at the tech giant.

Two graduates from the Facebook Rotational Engineers Program— Mexican immigrants Lucy Beatriz Gomez and Angel Gomez Salazar will be on hand as will Facebook recruiters Alma Sandoval (Software Engineering) and Felicia Yep Salinas (Security).

Beatriz Gomez grew up in Tabasco, Mexico and took courses in Engineering at the University of Monterrey. She began work as a 3D modeler, designer and programmer and went onto work at Google Play and Blackberry. She recently got her Master’s from Carnegie Mellon.

Gomez Salazar earned a computer science degree in Mexico and began coding when he was 10 years old. Prior to working at Facebook, he was an Android engineer.

Mission College’s STEM Week will also feature panel discussions on women in STEM, patent law and climate change, its annual Eco Fair and culminate in its two-day Hackathon.
