Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Collection

Asian American Collection dragon

With a generous grant from the Robert N. Chang Charitable Foundation, the Mission College Library created the Asian American Collection and Speaker Program in 2004. The name was eventually changed to include Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islanders.

The Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Collection is a special collection of the Mission College Library. The collection showcases writings by and about all Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, with an emphasis on Chinese Americans. It includes books and ebooks as well as audiovisual materials. It chronicles the unique history, culture, and experiences of AANHPI people who strive to be successful in American society while maintaining their ethnic identities and cultural heritage.

It includes a wide selection of materials from immigrant experiences to successive generations who have made an impact on American society. It reflects the challenges of youth who are growing up in two cultural worlds: the world of their parents and grandparents, and the world of contemporary America.

A concerted effort has been made to build a thoughtful and balanced collection that not only supports the curriculum, but also promotes cultural awareness.
